Islam shapes a lot of Somali Cuisine and Dictates what type of meat can be consumed by those following Islamic Religious Doctrine. Though In some case’s religious choice plays little part in some of the foods we consume, but in the case of choosing meat based product this becomes noticeable and understandable as to why such importance is needed.
Many do not realize, though most cultural cuisines across the globe are vegetable based, similar to the cuisine of Eskimos in North America, Somali Cuisine is a majority meat based cuisine. There are a lot of different reasons for this, but the two main reasons are, that there is not much land to grow a wide variety of plants, also a large amount of the population of Somalia is nomadic and when a culture moves around a lot it becomes hard to plant, grow and wait for harvest when a population does not stay in one place long enough.
Though camel is consumed it’s not as common as a food due to camel for the most part considered a beast of burden and is mostly kept to help carry things similar to horses in the west, Camel is also used for its milk and when you live in a dry climate where water is scares having access to items such as Milk is important, as well life sustaining.
